The London imprint Nonclassical is celebrating the centenary of pioneering electronic music composer Daphne Oram by releasing a project where a diverse selection of artists, including Cosey Fanni Tutti, Deena Abdelwahed, and Arushi Jain, use samples from her archive. Despite her significant contributions, Oram remains underappreciated. Born in 1925, she forewent the Royal College of Music for a job at the BBC, where she was instrumental in establishing the Radiophonic Workshop. Her pioneering works include "Still Point" (1940s), believed to be the first piece to match acoustic orchestration with live electronic processes, and the BBC's first entirely electronic score, "Amphitryon 38" (1957). Her greatest legacy is the Oramics system, a graphical sound synthesizer developed after leaving the BBC in 1959, which transformed etchings into sound. Nonclassical granted 10 artists access to Oram's archive, featuring Oramics snippets, environmental sounds, voice recordings, and jingles. The resulting tracks range from Cosey Fanni Tutti's industrial, reverberated sound and TAALIYAH's noisy oscillations to Deena Abdelwahed's dancefloor-leaning "Eidolon," showcasing a respectful and diverse reinterpretation of her legacy.
