The name "Nusantara" is derived from a Javanese word meaning "outer islands," referring to Indonesia—the world's largest archipelago and the site of the country's new capital being built to replace Jakarta. Nusantara Beat is a musical collective from Amsterdam, formed by six musicians with Indonesian roots, who have created an eccentric debut album. Their music is a hybrid that merges Indonesian melodies, atmospheres, and vocals with arrangements blending funk and post-rock (or post-funk), featuring the resonating echo of Western guitars. Singer Megan De Klerk's vocals, initially appearing sweet, are actually more lysergic, while the rhythmic section and guitars evoke records like those by Cocteau Twins or Tortoise, suggesting space-time journeys. Impossible to categorize strictly as pop or world music, Nusantara Beat's sound is distinct from anything else in today's exotica scene. Members previously played in bands like Jungle By Night (Afrobeat) and Altın Gün (Anatolian psychedelic rock), highlighting Amsterdam's role as a hub for world-music-infused pop.
