Os Haxixins, a retro-styled garage rock combo from São Paulo, Brazil, named after a group of 19th-century poets and intellectuals fond of hashish, prioritize strict authenticity. They exclusively use vintage equipment, wear period clothing, and insisted on recording their debut album on analog tape. Their efforts resulted in 16 tracks that accurately capture the gritty, fuzzy soul of classic garage rock and early psychedelia. Dominated by Alexandre Alopra's Farfisa organ patterns, Os Haxixins' music is reminiscent of bands like The Seeds and The Electric Prunes, yet manages to sound even more primitive. Despite their purist approach, the band is not afraid to be aggressive, especially in guitarist Fabio Fiuza's ripsaw solos utilizing a fuzz pedal. The majority of their songs are sung in Portuguese, which, while potentially making the album less accessible to some, provides them with a unique sonic personality that distinguishes them on the contemporary garage scene. Os Haxixins successfully blend faithfulness to the vintage sound of the '60s with their own original contribution, making their album one of the best releases in the recent garage revival.
