In 2013, the author, while in Glasgow, decided to contact the musician Ata Kak (Yaw). He flew to Toronto, where he met Yaw’s son, Jeffrey, which eventually led to communication with Ata Kak himself and the explanation of how popular his music had become. Although the Awesome Tapes From Africa (ATFA) label was operational, the first reissue of Ata Kak's cassette Obaa Sima, which served as the blog's manifesto, suffered from poor sound quality.
In early 2024, the author serendipitously acquired a "clean copy" of Obaa Sima from a new friend, coinciding with the approaching 10th anniversary of the reissue. This new source, coupled with the work of sound engineer Jessica Thompson, resulted in a new, high-quality remaster of the album, which the author believes finally reveals the music's intended sound. While the author has fond memories of the sonic artifacts in the older recording, he values the chance to share a cleaner version.
During a trip to Kumasi for a documentary shoot, the author discovered that Obaa Sima was far more popular in Ghana in the 90s than previously thought, often played at funerals and local parties, despite Yaw's earlier reports. It was also learned that the original recording was made at a slower speed. The author expresses gratitude to Ata Kak's booking agents and band members for organizing live shows, which have been a great joy, describing live performances of Obaa Sima as astounding.
