The debut album by Mexico City composer, musician, and singer-songwriter Sebastián Rojas, En La Orilla ("On the Shore"), charts a solo journey from emotional turmoil to stability, reflecting his personal experiences after the COVID-19 pandemic curtailed his tour and led to financial and family difficulties. The album merges the synthesized sounds of synth-wave, cold-wave, new wave pop, and elements of Bolero and South American roots pop. Rojas was supported by an ensemble of musicians for the recording, including Américo Hollander (bass), Emiliano Tinajero (saxophone), and Nicolás Fernández (synths), and it was produced by Hugo Quezada. The album's musical palette ranges from electronic sounds to organic instrumentation like acoustic guitar and vibraphone. Influences span from Bolero icons such as Pedro Infante to contemporary acts, with nods to Japanese environmental music and 80s pop. The record is filled with atmospherics, balladry, and synthesized sounds, possessing a nostalgic yet contemporary inventive pop feel with a bluesy undertone. The final track borrows a phrase from Chilean novelist Roberto Bolaño Ávalos, concluding the album with "breathing, living and airy abstract feelings."
