The album "Aria" is a jazz tribute to the works of Giacomo Puccini, stemming from the long-standing collaboration between pianist Roy Powell and bassist Lorenzo Feliciati, which began in 2007. Their shared exploration of Italian music through a jazz lens previously resulted in the albums Napoli (2009) and The Italian Songbook (2024). Inspired by the fruitful chemistry during the latter project, for which drummer Lucrezio de Seta joined, the trio chose to reinterpret Puccini's operatic melodies. The choice of Puccini was partly inspired by Miles Davis's unmaterialized idea for a collaboration centered on Tosca. "Aria" continues the jazz tradition of reinterpreting classic material, using the lyrical beauty and harmonic depth of Puccini's arias as a foundation for improvisation. In addition to the operatic pieces, the album includes a spontaneous, extended version of the jazz standard My Funny Valentine and Powell's original composition Les Belles Femmes. The album, which bridges two great musical traditions, culminates with a performance of the iconic aria Nessun Dorma.
