Summary (in English): Diamanda Galás' album You Must Be Certain of the Devil (1988), the concluding part of her Masque of the Red Death trilogy, is a furious and uncompromising indictment of those who condemn the sick and dying during the AIDS epidemic in the name of religious faith. Contrary to the common perception of its "darkness," the album instead exposes the genuine pain, grief, and hypocrisy of society and church institutions that branded the virus's victims as cursed. Galás achieves this by reinterpreting traditional gospel spirituals into scathing anthems. The trilogy, begun in 1984 and motivated by her brother's death in 1986, became a politically aware refusal of closure and a reflection of trauma that the artist, who calls herself a "Greek orthodox atheist," perceives as an eternal present. The recent reissue of the album includes remastered audio by Heba Kadry, as well as new vinyl lacquers and photography by Emily Andersen.
