Hydroplane - A Place In My Memory Is All I Have To Claim (2025)

The Australian trio Hydroplane, formed from members of The Cat's Miaow, has released their first album in over two decades, 'A Place in my Memory...', continuing the style they developed in the 90s. The new work maintains a balance between languid pop songs and minimalist, ghosted instrumentation, featuring decaying drum machine loops and spacey synths, reminiscent of a blend between Suicide and Boards of Canada. The album, recorded just last year, sounds like a continuation of their 1990s experimental pop record 'The Sound of Changing Places', which foreshadowed the "Melbourne sound." Most tracks, with the exception of the finale 'I've Got a Buzz,' create an "enticingly chilly" and detached atmosphere, utilizing techniques such as smudgy synths and cathedral reverb, and interspersing songs with atmospheric interludes. Despite being described as "dark material," the album is highly compelling and warrants repeated listening.
