Naya Beat is releasing a reissue of Mohinder Kaur Bhamra's lost 1982 album "Punjabi Disco" — the first British-Asian electronic dance album. The release includes remixes by Peaking Lights, Danger Boys, Psychemagik, Dexter+Franz, Mystic Jungle, and Baalti, a cover by Piya Malik of Say She She with Turbotito & Ragz, and a new track. The album is available for preorder and will be out on October 31, 2025, on vinyl and digital formats.
Recorded in London using a Roland SH-1000 synthesizer and CR-8000 drum machine, the album was produced by Mohinder's son, bhangra pioneer Kuljit Bhamra. The concept was stolen by the label, leading to a self-release that vanished into obscurity. Mohinder, the first female vocalist at Punjabi weddings in the UK, created the album to desegregate dancefloors, inspired by disco. The sound blends disco, funk, acid house, and Punjabi folk melodies with powerful vocals.
The reissue is mixed and remastered from masters found during lockdown, thanks to a tip from Nu Genea. It is comparable to Charanjit Singh's "Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat" and promises to revive interest in dance music. Presented in a gatefold package with liner notes by Ammar Kalia, it is cut to vinyl by Frank Merritt. This is Naya Beat's ninth project reviving music from the subcontinent and diaspora.
