The musical project Caged Animals is composed of singer-songwriter Vincent Cacchione and visual artist Magali Charron. Vincent Cacchione, the son of a comic and a teacher, began his music career at the anti-folk academy at the Sidewalk Café and was also involved with the band Soft Black. His songs have consistently maintained a sharp sincerity. Over the past decade, Vin has refined his skills as a storyteller and songwriter by collaborating with pioneers in fiction podcasts, such as Welcome to Night Vale and Hedwig creator John Cameron Mitchell. Their album Make Strange Friends was conceived after the couple relocated to Sackville, New Brunswick, and was recorded in collaboration with indie musician Jon Mckiel, who co-produced the album, embracing a raw, spontaneous lo-fi approach using a Tascam 388 tape machine. The album, which draws comparisons to works like The Basement Tapes and Mellow Gold, merges rough-hewn, folky impressionism with a postmodern palette. Make Strange Friends explores the world's binaries, depicting characters who are either running away or stuck, combining haunted music with humorous dialogue, resulting in a multifaceted work that serves as both a time capsule of a strange era and a tender love letter to the next chapter.
