The Science of Sound is the third album by Jason Everett’s Deep Energy Orchestra, showcasing a vibrant blend of jazz-rock infused with Indian music. Everett, the only musician present on all eight tracks, brought together an extensive and diverse lineup of collaborators, including well-known names such as Joe Deninzon, Gary Husband, Trey Gunn, and Adam Holzman. The album explores various jazz fusion styles, ranging from the fiery "Captain Quirk," featuring dynamic violin, synth, and guitar work, to "Dance of the Wood Nymphs," which echoes Mahavishnu, and the mellower "The Dancers" with its unison arrangement of wordless vocals, flute, and bass. "Secrets of Subtraction" is a fusion workout with trading licks between keyboards and guitar over a rhythm section employing odd meters. Despite the rotating personnel, Everett's bass serves as the unifying core of the sound, making The Science of Sound a coherent and enjoyable blend of genres.
