The first chapter of Don Cherry's legendary "Mu" recordings, captured in Paris during the late sixties, is a vital and compelling example of free jazz, performed by Cherry and Ed Blackwell, both alumni of the revolutionary Ornette Coleman quartet. The album's focus, consistent with Cherry's other releases, is on the life-giving and often magical qualities of pure sound, created using a range of instruments, including Cherry's signature pocket trumpet, as well as Indian and bamboo flutes. A significant aspect of the composition "Mu" is that it was built entirely on spontaneous improvisation: all parts, their order, and duration were created by the musicians within the session itself without any preconception. The album is considered a masterclass in improvisation, showcasing the complete freedom and impeccable integrity of the two musicians.
