Anita O'Day recorded three sessions for the Verve family during 1952, each one a four-song date recorded in a different jazz metropolis: New York in January, Chicago in July, and Los Angeles in December. A dry run for her immense success with Clef/Verve during the next decade, these sessions featured O'Day swinging hard in New York with a septet led by old bandmate Roy Eldridge, relaxing into a cool groove in Chicago with Roy Kral's quintet, and returning to her big-band days in Los Angeles in front of Larry Russell's orchestra. The differing formats prove no obstacle for one of jazz music's finest vocal musicians; "Love for Sale" is a bustling winner similar to her later (more popular) recording of the same song, and the Adler-Ross novelty "No Soap, No Hope Blues" finds her deftly scatting with pianist Kral up and down the scales. The Jazz Factory reissue of this material, Complete 1952 Verve Sessions, marked the first time this solid material had appeared since a nearly insurmountable nine-disc box was released by Mosaic. Following on from this compilation was an excellent volume from the French Classics label, 1950-1952.~John Bush
