Malira is the long-awaited new album by Australian band Not Drowning, Waving, released in 2025 on Origin Recordings. It marks their first full-length release in over three decades since the landmark Tabaran (1990), created with musicians from Papua New Guinea.
The 13-track record includes “Alar”, “Malira”, “Mangrove”, “Song From The Old Colony”, “The Dirty Chemist (Raskolore)”, “John Vuia (1950)”, “Smol Mad Lotu”, “Call Across The Chambri”, and “Atutana.”
The album blends art-rock, ambient electronics, and Melanesian rhythms, featuring longtime collaborators such as cellist Helen Mountfort, drummer Ben Hakalitz, and PNG singer George Telek. Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence, Malira reflects decades of friendship and cultural exchange.
