As the son of a naval officer, Donald Ralph Ewing received the nickname "Skip," derived from "Skipper," at an early age. His passion for country music was sparked by the songs of Merle Haggard and Lefty Frizzell. He was more adept at playing the guitar than reading and writing, and he wrote his first song at the age of ten. After graduating from high school, he made his first appearances at an amusement park in Virginia. At 19, he moved to Nashville, where he portrayed famous country musicians at Opryland.
