Les vents brûlants is the debut album by the trio Ensemble Chakâm, featuring Sogol Mirzaei (Iran, tar and setar), Christine Zayed (Palestine, qanun and vocals), and Marie-Suzanne de Loye (France, viola da gamba). The 38-minute album blends classical Persian, Arabic, and Baroque musical traditions with contemporary compositions and improvisations across eight tracks, including four pieces by Sogol Mirzaei, three by Christine Zayed, and a traditional Palestinian song, “Niyalak.” Exploring themes of exile, nostalgia, female empowerment, and hope, the trio—named after an ancient Persian poetic form—creates a rich soundscape where the vibrant tar, silky qanun, and deep viola da gamba engage in a powerful yet soothing dialogue. The album reflects the personal journeys of the musicians, their cross-cultural experiences, and their fight for freedom of expression, making it both a musical and socio-political statement. Tracks like the lively opener “Didâr” and the lyrical “Najma (Etoile)” showcase a balance of poetic finesse and rhythmic vitality.
