A solid debut, Daniel Tashian's Sweetie instantly places the Nashville-based singer/songwriter (and son of Barry Tashian of the legendary Boston garage rockers Barry and the Remains) in the company of structurally traditional but sonically adventurous folks like Michael Penn, Jon Brion, or Sam Phillips, whose husband T-Bone Burnett produced this set. A multi-instrumentalist who handles most of the album's musical parts himself (with Lisa Germano collaborator Jay Joyce adding guitar, among other guests), Tashian is a gifted arranger and canny melodicist. Every track has fascinating aural touches that reveal themselves over multiple listens. Lyrically, Tashian's born-again Christianity imparts itself in subtle, non-preachy ways on several songs, but more secular concerns are addressed as well, as on the Byrds-like "Where Have You Gone." A terrific debut, and it's a shame that Tashian, who spends most of his time backing and producing other artists, hasn't given his solo career more emphasis.
