Though Canada’s Maritime provinces aren’t typically known for producing major blues artists, Matt Andersen from New Brunswick has spent over a decade building a solid reputation with consistently strong releases and heavy touring. For his follow-up to the Juno-nominated 2014 album “Weightless,” he teamed up with seasoned R&B producer Commissioner Gordon (Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone) in New York to create “Honest Man” (2016).
Andersen’s roots-based style naturally blends blues, folk, soul, rock, and country, so this turn toward a more polished R&B direction makes sense on paper. The album’s opener “Break Away” is upbeat and funky, while the title track adds a B-3 organ and horns to the groove. However, Gordon’s studio sheen — with programmed beats, samples, and synths — feels excessive at times, dulling Andersen’s usual earthy charm. As a performer known for commanding attention with just his voice and an acoustic guitar, the production here feels misaligned with his strengths. Exceptions like “I’m Giving In” and “Last Surrender” offer a more authentic feel, but overall, this shiny pop detour doesn't quite stick the landing.
