Erik Rico - The Rare Groove Project (2025)

In which Erik Rico, an accomplished hip-hop musician who's worked with the likes of Jurassic 5, Q-Tip and Digable Planets over the course of a 25-year-plus career, delivers three covers of obscure funk/boogie gems from the 80s, then gets some top-flight remixers in to work their dancefloor magic. The tracks in question are P.J. City's 'Straight Forward', Franklyn's 'Future Love' and Star Lighters' 'Disco Funk', and Rico's covers are mostly pretty faithful/respectful to the boogie originals, but there's a bit more variety in the remixes, which range from the vintage Chi-town vibes of Gerd Janson's House Mix of 'Straight Forward' to the wonked-out jazz of Aroop Roy's take on 'Disco Funk'.
