The top black-eyed soul band from East L.A. presents a rock side for garage fans and a soul side for low-rider fans in this definitive 2-CD set! While white hot-rodders competed with each other for speed, Chicanos cruised the streets of Whittier Avenue on weekends in their luxuriously modified used cars from the 1930s and 1940s, asking the girls they met out on dates. By 1964, however, many white teens (40% of East Los Angeles) and Chicano teens (60%) had become obsessed with the Beatles and Rolling Stones, and Whittier Street was filled with Beatles haircuts, slim pants, and Beetle boots. Stores selling cutting-edge fashions, such as sweaters, opened one after another.The Gee Midnighters emerged from the ranks, and under Little Willie G, who has been called Chicano's best vocalist, the Gee Midnighters quickly rose to the top of the East Los Angeles scene, pounding white surfers and English-crazed teens with their strong R&B and rock numbers and melting ballads for black and Chicano cruising teens. The band quickly rose to become one of the top bands in East Los Angeles with their ballads.
