Metallic Life Review is the latest conceptually rich album from experimental electronic duo Matmos (Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt), continuing their tradition of transforming unlikely sound sources into deeply expressive music. This time, they construct an entire album from field recordings of metallic objects — bronze, copper, steel, aluminum — gathered over their decades-long career.
The album explores the possibilities of metal as both sound and memory, using everything from childhood pots and pans to crypt gates and tape reels from the INA/GRM studios. It juxtaposes industrial clangor with melodic delicacy, crafting beauty from sonic detritus through meticulous editing and improvisation. The result is a compressed retrospective of Matmos’ artistic journey — a “life review” in sound.
Side two, uniquely recorded live in the studio, captures the unpredictable, evolving interplay of their performances, adding immediacy and rawness not heard in their previous albums. The record also features contributions from Susan Alcorn, Thor Harris, Owen Gardner, and others.
Emotionally charged and conceptually layered, Metallic Life Review is part sonic sculpture, part autobiographical collage — a powerful reflection on mortality, legacy, and the transformative potential of sound. It’s playful, poignant, and profoundly human.
