Earl Snead was born October 29, 1939 in Danville, Virginia. His favorite music even at a very young age was Bluegrass, especially the Banjo and fiddle. Earl started learning to play the Banjo at the age of 12, his first job being with his good friend Clyde Moody at the WDVA Barndance in Danville, at 15 years of age.
One year later he started playing with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys at the Grand Ole’ Opry in Nashville, Tn. For over ten years he played off and on with Bill Monroe and then had the opportunity to record with him on his Hall of Fame album.
In the following years Earl appeared on such shows as Mike Douglas and The Wilburn Bros. and frequent appearances on the Grand Ole’ Opry. He also worked with many Bluegrass stars such as the late Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass, Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys and recorded with Benny Martin on his Marathon Album in Toronto, Canada.
After moving to Nashville in 1969 and accomplishing some of his performing and recording goals, he opened the only night club in Nashville that featured strictly Bluegrass music — The Bluegrass Inn. The club was well known throughout the United States and overseas.
While running the Bluegrass Inn, Earl became friends with Shot Jackson, owner of the Sho Bud in Nashville and together they constructed a 5 string Pedal Banjo. This is the first album recorded with such an instrument.
