Discovery is the eighth studio album by English rock band Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). It was released in the United Kingdom on 1 June 1979 by Jet Records, where it reached number one, and in the United States on 8 June 1979 by Jet through Columbia Records. A video album containing all the songs was released on VHS in 1979, and was re-released in 1998 as part of Out of the Blue: Live at Wembley DVD and VHS. Discovery was the band's first number-one album in the United Kingdom, where it charted at number one and remained there for five weeks. The album contained five hit singles: "Shine a Little Love", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Last Train to London", "Confusion" and "The Diary of Horace Wimp", many of which were heavily influenced by disco (indeed, Richard Tandy nicknamed the album Disco Very). "Don't Bring Me Down" became one of only two top three hits in the UK during their career ("Xanadu" had been number one in 1980), and was also their highest-charting US single at number 4. "The Diary of Horace Wimp" was also a hit in the UK, though not in the disco style; instead, it was closer to the Beatlesque style of the band's previous hit, "Mr. Blue Sky". The album itself was the first to generate four top 10 singles (one of which was a double A-side) from a single LP in the UK, and was eventually certified 2× platinum by the RIAA in 1997.
