The highly talented and critically acclaimed cellist Ophélie Gaillard is here joined by the collection of virtuoso soloists known as Pulcinella and the soprano Sandrine Piau in a CD of music by the innovative 18th century composer Luigi Boccherini which includes two cello concertos, the "Aria Accademica" and the famous "Fandango".

Born in Lucca in Italy in 1743, the composer and virtuoso cellist Luigi Boccherini was a contemporary of Haydn, however his music is a good deal more adventurous in its harmonic language and structure than most composers of the period. One need only listen to the cello concertos of Vivaldi or Leonardo Leo to measure the revolution in technique that Boccherini brought about. Already hailed as a teenage prodigy when he made his debut appearances in Vienna and Paris he settled in Madrid in 1769, remaining there until 1787 when he was appointed "Composer of his Chamber" by the great musical patron Friedrich Willhelm 11 of Prussia. However when this arrangement came to an end in 1797, he returned to Spain where he died in poverty in 1805.

As eclectic in her musical choices as in her instrumental practice, the Franco-Swiss cellist Ophélie
Gaillard was voted 'solo instrumental discovery of the year' at the Victoires de la Musique in 2003. She has appeared in recital in the most prestigious venues, where she champions the repertoire for solo cello, from the Bach suites to first performances of contemporary music. Her complete recordings for the Ambroisie label of the suites of Bach and Britten, the cello works of Fauré and the Vivaldi cello sonatas have been warmly received by the international press.

Pulcinella is a collective of virtuoso soloists who come together in the spirit of chamber music to explore the vast areas of the repertoire that incorporate the cello as a solo instrument. The musicians of the ensemble are all enthusiastic practitioners of Baroque music on period instruments.
