The convergence of violin and cello in a duo setting offers a unique sonic landscape – one that is both intimate and expressive, capable of great lyricism and rhythmic vitality. In this recording, we explore the rich traditions of Argentine tango and Brazilian choro through our own original arrangements, drawing on both historical authenticity and contemporary interpretation to re-imagine these genres for the violin-cello duo.
This project was born from Duo-B’s recognition of a growing demand for musical styles outside the standard Western classical canon. As performers and educators, we have observed an increasing curiosity among classical audiences for music that reflects a broader spectrum of global traditions. By arranging and performing these works, our goal is to bridge the gap between traditional folk and classical concert settings, fostering a deeper appreciation for tango and choro within the classical music world.
The challenge of arranging these pieces for violin and cello lies not only in adapting the harmonic and rhythmic framework of larger ensembles but also in preserving the emotional essence that makes tango and choro so compelling. These arrangements maintain the structural integrity of the original compositions while exploring the full expressive range of the string duo, demonstrating that these genres, deeply rooted in tradition, continue to evolve through new instrumental interpretations.
By bringing together these two musical traditions, as well as featuring three of Hirono’s latest original compositions, this recording serves as both a tribute and a reinvention. Our arrangements attempt to bridge past and present, folk and classical, dance and concert music, offering listeners a fresh perspective on these enduring genres through the dynamic and versatile voices of the violin and cello.
Duo-B is a dynamic violin and cello ensemble that is redefining the possibilities of string chamber music. Founded in 2009, the duo emerged from the chance meeting of Japanese violinist Hirono Sugimoto and American cellist Philip Borter at the Hochschule für Musik-Freiburg in Germany. Their shared passion for travel, innovative music-making, and cross-cultural exploration soon led to a creative partnership that flourished during further studies at the Eastman School of Music.
Committed to expanding the violin-cello repertoire, Duo-B explores music beyond the traditional classical canon, drawing inspiration from folk traditions across Europe, Japan, and South America. Their performances highlight the expressive intimacy of the string duo while seamlessly blending historical influences with contemporary interpretations. Their latest recording project showcases original arrangements of South American choro and tango, reflecting their deep engagement with these vibrant musical traditions.
Beyond performance, Duo-B is dedicated to shaping the future of chamber music through composition, arrangement, and education. Hirono, an accomplished composer, creates original works for the duo, including Reimagining Bach—a series that reinterprets solo works by J.S. Bach through contemporary styles. She has also been commissioned by organizations such as Red Cedar Chamber Music and has collaborated with Trinity College London as an arranger. In 2020, Duo-B further advanced the string duo repertoire by hosting a Call for Scores, in collaboration with the Iowa Composers Forum, which resulted in the premiere and recording of six new works for violin and cello. Together, the duo curates and publishes their own works through Duo-B Press, offering innovative arrangements and new compositions to expand the string duo repertoire. Their original compositions and arrangements have been studied and performed in more than 20 countries worldwide, and have been praised for their broad audience appeal and seamless blending of classical traditions with diverse global influences.
As educators, they have presented workshops, lectures, and performances at institutions across the United States, including Ave Maria University, Baylor University, Luther College, the University of Iowa, the University of Memphis, the University of Southern Mississippi, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Their expertise in South American music has been featured in conferences for the College Music Society, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the American String Teachers Association.
Duo-B has been featured in prestigious venues and festivals across three continents, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Minatomirai Hall in Yokohama, and the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Recent appearances include the Experiencing Villa-Lobos International Festival, the Cedar Valley Chamber Music Festival, the Victoria Bach Festival, Beerthoven in Austin, Texas, and the Romanza Festivale in St. Augustine, Florida. With a reputation for bold programming and engaging performances, Duo-B continues to push the boundaries of what a violin-cello duo can achieve.
