"I've been having these big feelings / Getting lost in the trees and the power lines". Lake South has considered our personal / political relationship with the landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand from a variety of angles on previous long players The Light You Throw (2021), Wellington | Te Upoko O Te Ika (2019), and If You're Born On An Island The Ocean Heals You (2017). The Pōneke-based electronic producer / songwriter now grapples with our oft-misunderstood Tāmaki Makaurau, newfound parenthood and much more on album number four We lived our lives on top of this, primarily recorded "between his garage and a DOC hut at the Pinnacles in the Wairarapa".
Exuberant expressions of belonging and friendship abound on twelve soaring electronic pop 'ElectricUTOPIA' ballads, often feeling memoir-like in lyrical detail — "put all the sentiment into stories" — grounded by a critical eye on the everyday social-political struggle permeating Aotearoa. A lovingly crafted, humanistic protest album calling for dignity and kinship, Lake South and bandmates Theo Sekeris (Ras Judah, Rubita), Eddie Crawshaw (Sheep Dog & Wolf, Bonaparte), and Penelope Esplin (French for Rabbits, Eigenface) will be celebrating the record this winter on stages nationwide. It sounds like they're getting their ducks in a row for a European adventure in the nearish future too, join Lake South and friends locally at the following dates...
"The album is a clarion call to link arms and stop traffic. It’s an ode to the kindness of old friends. A forlorn wail for the never-ending pursuit of peace. It’s a defiant sprint down an empty suburban street. A lament for the inexorable erosion of hills. A document of new love.
The title of the album comes from Elizabeth Strout's book 'Oh William!' (used with permission).
USA-style individualism and belief in meritocracy is flawed and harmful. That kind of thinking leads to selfishness, discrimination and indifference to the less fortunate.
Everyone works hard but only some people get lucky. Once we accept that, we can work with each other for good."
