n 2023–24, arranger Mark Masters and his Southern California big band recorded two tribute albums: Sam Rivers 100, honoring the late saxophonist on his centennial, and Dance, Eternal Spirits, Dance!, celebrating Billy Harper’s 82nd birthday (with Harper guesting on both). While Rivers’s music spanned bop to free jazz, Harper’s roots lie firmly in the hard-bop tradition of Dexter Gordon and Hank Mobley—making his charts a natural fit for Masters’s penchant for straight-ahead, swinging arrangements.

On Dance, Eternal Spirits, Dance!, Harper solos on all but one track and brings pianist Francesca Tanksley, whose comping and four stirring solos enrich every tune. Masters’s charts spotlight Harper’s compositions—ranging from explosive numbers like “Insight” and “Was It Here… Is It There?” to ballads such as “If One Could Only See” and the minor-key waltz “The One Who Makes the Rain Stop.” Throughout, trumpeters Tim Hagans and Aaron Janik, tenors Jerry Pinter and Kirsten Edkins, and trombonist Ido Meshulam provide strong ensemble support, even if they don’t take solos on this session.

Ultimately, these two tributes—one to Rivers’s adventurous legacy, the other to Harper’s hard-bop mastery—stand as complementary, high-caliber statements from the Mark Masters Jazz Ensemble.
