Alicia Luisa Delgado Hilario (1959-2009), known as "the princess of Peruvian folklore," was a celebrated Peruvian folk singer specializing in huayno with harp. She launched her career at 16, recording her first hit "Un Fracaso en la vida" in 1975, and went on to record over a thousand Peruvian songs. Delgado was instrumental in spreading Andean folk music throughout South America, gaining popularity in Chile, Ecuador, and Bolivia, and resided in the United States for several years before returning to Peru in the early 2000s.
Delgado had a high-profile nine-year relationship with fellow folk singer Abencia Meza. This relationship ended amidst intense jealousy and death threats from Meza, which Delgado reported to authorities. Tragically, Delgado was found dead in her Lima home on June 25, 2009, having suffered stab wounds and strangulation. Investigations led to the conviction of Meza, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2012 for Delgado's murder. Alicia Delgado is buried in the "Jardines del Buen Retiro" Cemetery in Lima.
