Gladys Knight & The Pips, released on Maxx in 1965, just prior to her signing with Motown, is a masterpiece of early emotional singing by the "Queen of Soul," Gladys Knight, and introspective ballads by Van McCoy. Gladys Knight's second album, "Gladys Knight," was quietly released on the Maxx label in 1965, just before she signed with Motown. It is the culmination of the "crying" era, when young Gladys Knight sang with pain and hope. The ballads, written by Van McCoy (later known for "The Hustle") when he was still unknown, have an introspective and melancholy melody, and Gladys's taut vocals and Pips' precise harmonies create a sense of drama. Although "Giving Up" was a hit, the album did not receive much attention, but listening to it now, it is a record of the girls' transitional brilliance and the germ of Van McCoy's talent, a record of their soul.
