In the heat of the arc of summer on the island I was wearing the same shorts and t-shirt every day. Nothing else felt right, and the idea of washing the clothes or my body seemed a far away mainland concept, why wash when you’re in and out of the sea and everything in covered in dust anyway?
In the heat of the arc I wore a straw cowboy hat that I bought in the market and I gained a nickname from my party friends and drinking buddies - Coco De La Isla.
It was given with affection but it barely hid the truth, that despite my best efforts, and my habitual outfit, and my quotidian rhythms, including embracing the siesta and midnight suppers and super heated late night dancing, I was still an outsider, a misfit on an island of misfits, too mild a hedonist for the extremes of the climate and the company.
Still, I was part of the gang and with the gang, the broader group of island natives, long time residents, short time swallows, dropping in on the way from or the the way to who knows where, I did manage to make a suitably odd selection of misfit tracks that have been sitting in the background on various hard drives, determined to remain unfinished, obstinately refusing to be mixed, and generally being obstreperous, even a little callous and definitely unforgiving and a source of all sorts of pain.
But now, finally, they are ready to leave their treasured isolation in an endless summer of their imaginations, get together with the old crew, and find their way out into the wider world, in the form of a collection of music that uses my island nickname as a title, and, if necessary, an excuse for none of the tracks exactly fitting together or sounding particularly what some one not in the gang would thing of as island music anyway.
So here it is, in all its sweaty, flawed, dusty, sunburnt glory. I present - Coco De La Isla.
