On their third full-length excursion, 'Open', Amsterdam duo Dam Swindle have made a concerted effort to widen their sonic palette, successfully turning their hand to a wider array of complimentary musical styles. While that means fewer of the straight-up deep house jams they're renowned for (though those present are uniformly excellent, as you'd expect), it arguably makes for more rewarding listening. For proof, check gorgeous synth-wave-with-jazz-guitar instrumental 'Home', the head-nodding sunshine soul of 'Not Enough' (featuring vocalist Haile Supreme), warming and loose-limbed hip-house heaters 'Open' (featuring Samson) and 'Same Day' (with Ric Wilson), the heady piano ambience of 'Bloom' (featuring keys-player Joep Boeving), woozy downtempo grooves (the soul-soaked 'It's Okay, I Can Wait') and jazzy, spaced-out electronica ('Closer'). Simply superb!
