Judith Weir's colorful story about 14th century China is alternately comical, melodramatic and tragic. Set during Genghis Khan's invasion of China, it tells the story of the orphaned Chao Lin. A critic of Opera magazine noted that "few new operas have recently made as exciting a first impression as Night at the Chinese Opera, partly due to their intrinsic musical and dramatic virtues, partly due to the style of staging."
