Kylie Minogue - Kylie Hits (2025)

Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue hasn't exactly been under-represented when it comes to best-of collections, but this Japanese-only release, Kylie Hits, does at least offer something slightly different than the plethora of collections out there, concentrating solely on the noughties period that saw her bounce back from her '90s Brit-pop disaster to become bigger and more successful than she ever was in her Stock, Aitken & Waterman heyday. Kicking off with the robotic electro of "Can't Get You Out of My Head," perhaps her most iconic hit, its 14 tracks also include material from each of her last five studio albums, from the shiny disco-pop of triumphant comeback single "Spinning Around" (2000's Light Years), to the euphoric filtered Gallic house of "Love at First Sight" (2001's Fever), to the minimal electro of U.K. chart-topper "Slow" (2003's Body Language), to the feisty glam rock of "2 Hearts" (2007's X), to the shimmering synth pop of "All the Lovers" (2010's Aphrodite), all of which show how much her sound has progressed during the last ten years. Elsewhere, there is the glittery Scissor Sisters-penned "I Believe in You" (from 2004's Ultimate Kylie), a Yasutaka Nakata remix of recent single "Get Outta My Way" (also included here in its original form), and two rather random performances from the Sydney date of her Showgirl Tour ("The Locomotion," "I Should Be So Lucky"), which feel out of place among the more contemporary offerings. Considering there's a wealth of familiar singles omitted ("Red Blooded Woman," "Come into My World," "Please Stay"), the latter three seem rather unnecessary filler. But while Kylie Hits isn't an essential or comprehensive addition to her back catalog, for anyone wanting the big hits of her second golden era, it does the trick just fine. © Jon O'Brien
