This early Jack Jones album seems to sit on the fence, stylistically speaking. Jones mostly stuck with Frank Sinatra-style vocal music, but at this point he sounds so much like Bobby Rydell it isn't hard to imagine him crossing over to rock & roll if his success there were assured. The title track is drawn from the musical Bye Bye Birdie (the 1963 film version of which starred Rydell, coincidentally), but most of the other songs are pop standards like "Donkey Serenade" (originally a hit for his father, Allan Jones) and Cole Porter's "I Love Paris." The arrangements are handled by big-band veterans Pete King, Billy May, and Marty Paich, and convey the energy and rhythm you'd expect from a young Vegas showman. Jones achieved his greatest success with adult pop and easy listening vocal music in the mid-'60s, but his early recordings are exciting and fun, containing just enough teen idol pizzazz to make them seem more fresh and vital than the old timers' big-band music, at least at the time.
