Meteor Infant is the songwriting project of Gomeroi Indigenous Australian guitarist Liam Keenan. With roots in regional New South Wales in North-West rural NSW near the QLD border, Keenan has developed a distinct song-craft shaped by the layered experience of memory, geography and ancestral connection to country.
Now based in Sydney, Keenan has furthered his ambitions in the world of experimental guitar composition, releasing a collaborative album in 2024 with indie-rock experimentalist David Grubbs entitled Your Music Encountered in a Dream. A suite of three improvised guitar duets, layering effects and extended guitar techniques to explore the boundaries of harmony and dissonance.
Drawing from a lineage of outliers such as Gastr Del Sol, Six Organs of Admittance and Elliott Smith, Keenan has refined a unique approach to fingerstyle guitar on new Meteor Infant album Pilliga Circumstance.
The title directly references the Pilliga Nature Reserve in regional New South Wales, which is the largest remaining native forest on the Australian continent, and a significant cultural site for Keenan’s Gomeroi people.
Vast and largely undisturbed by development, the Pilliga in recent times has become increasingly well-known as a hotspot for stories of paranormal experiences and encounters.
Tourists, truck-drivers and nearby locals traverse its roads each year, and through these songs, Keenan explores the unique resonance of this place.
