In a world of rappers who reportedly DGAF, Maria-Cecilia Simone Kelly has to be in at least the 90th percentile. As Rico Nasty she never brings less than room-rattling energy whether she's unleashing a to-the-point mixtape (Nasty and Anger Management told the story in their titles, a torch Lethal is proud to carry) or two remarkably eclectic proper albums (Nightmare Vacation, Las Ruinas) that still sound like she slammed them out after a few shots. Now 27—an eternity in rap years—she truly doesn't care about playing the game or trying to keep up with the kids. Whether the beats sound like jailbroken Game Boys, bleary-eyed rage rap, Auto-Tune meltdowns, pop-punk sing-alongs, or hardcore punk revivals—she murders it all in a kitchen blender and chugs it as quickly as the appliance diced it up.
Rico Nasty's most noticeable evolution on Lethal is the frequent dives into the moshpit: first single "TEETHSUCKER (YEA3x)" flows frantically over a blown-out Sabbath riff with a “yeah-yeah” chorus that could make whole stadiums storm the AstroTurf. "SMOKE BREAK" goes even harder, like Joan Jett fronting Body Count until a bellowing breakdown that wouldn't be out of place on a Drain or Jesus Piece album. "CRASH" catapults back to the other end of the punk spectrum with a melancholy, Blink-182 top line worthy of Willow's "t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l." While most of the second half explores guitar-drived melodies and tantrums, Rico continues to rap with fervor. Whether she's deliberately trolling sexist Playboi Carti fans by Xeroxing his bloopy world on "PINK" or declaring "I'm the party wherever I'm going" on "EAT ME!," Rico Nasty is never less than the center of attention in any style she pulls from her switchblade. © Daniel Aaron
