Jean-Michel Damase (1928-2013), a French composer popular for his chamber music works for flute and harp, was also a master pianist and left behind a total of 30 etudes, from concert pieces to educational pieces. Yamada Mayi, who received high praise for her previous work, Damase: Piano Works, has taken on the challenge of recording the complete works for the first time in the world. The composer himself said that "Eight Etudes" was written with the great pianist Georges Cziffra, who was called "the second coming of Liszt," in mind, as he wrote the difficult piece. "Bicycle," subtitled "Etude," is a rare piece that is full of a driving feeling that is uncharacteristic of Damase, and is sure to blow the mind of Damase fans.
Yamada Mayi's life's work is performing all of Damase's piano works. His second album, Damase: Piano Works, released in 2023, was selected as a special selection by Record Geijutsu and was also featured in Chopin Monthly, Asahi Shimbun (recommended in the "for your collection" section), Tokyo Shimbun, Chunichi Shimbun, and Toyo Keizai Weekly.
