“Lucine Musaelian / Fred Thomas Duo” is a collaborative project uniting London-based multi-instrumentalist Fred Thomas with Armenian-heritage performer Lucine Musaelian. They met in 2023 and set out to explore the deep well of sacred and secular Armenian monody by blending Lucine’s background in Early Music with Fred’s expertise in improvisation and Medieval repertoire.
Their practice interweaves newly written compositions with inventive reinterpretations of rare Armenian chants from the 11th and 12th centuries. Dramatic solo vocal lines (performed by Lucine) are framed by atmospheric drones—sometimes from viola da gamba or wheezing shruti box—while Fred’s prepared piano, vielle, and double bass add ritualistic and microtonal textures. The result is a seamless dialogue between ancient liturgical material and fresh creative expression.
