Orkiestra Galicja is a project dedicated to the traditional music of old Galicia — a multicultural region located at the southern edge of present-day Poland, in the shadow of the Carpathian Mountains, whose rich musical heritage and traditions form a unique melting pot. This area was home to many traditions that coexisted for centuries, which is particularly evident in its music.
The ensemble draws from the traditional repertoire of dances and songs from Polish Pogórze and Ukrainian Podkarpattia, the regions around Rzeszów and Lviv, performing tunes from the Pogórzanie, Boykos, Hutsuls, Hungarians, and klezmer melodies. The sounds of wild kolomyjkas and Ukrainian polkas, Pogórze-style oberks and slow dances, Galician krakowiaks and kozaks, wedding melodies, and songs from both traditions will be heard.
The project is created by outstanding musicians known from many leading endeavors on Poland’s traditional and folk music scene — practitioners and researchers of the musical traditions of Poland and Ukraine. Orkiestra Galicja embodies the very essence of Galician music — living music played with two violins, bass, double bass, baraban drum, hammered dulcimer, and clarinet — collected during field expeditions, listened to from archival recordings, and performed based on 19th-century notations by Oskar Kolberg.
Musical inspiration for the musicians comes from archival recordings of Galician masters of traditional music from the first half of the 20th century, such as the Sowa Band from Piątkowa, Henryk Kretowicz from Widełka, and recordings of Galician emigrants to the USA, including Pawlo Humeniuk and Franciszek Dukla.
The material from their debut album, titled "Drogi" ("Roads"), leads listeners along the musical paths of Galicia, winding from the areas near Kraków all the way to Ternopil in Ukraine. Galician dance tunes — krakowiaks and polkas, kolomyjkas and Ukrainian polkas, Pogórze-style oberks and slow dances, wedding melodies and songs, and klezmer motifs — are carried along the way. The band infuses traditional melodies with their own distinctive sound, arranging them in a contemporary style and weaving their own story about their Galicia.
