Justin Taylor has a passion for early keyboards and is always keen to match the works he tackles with the most appropriate historical instruments. Justin has always been fascinated by the music of Frederic Chopin, whose intimate musical world is presented here. We know that Chopin composed some of his preludes during his stay with George Sand in Mallorca, where he used a very special instrument. This was a Pleyel pianino -- a small upright piano of six and a half octaves that was only made between 1835 and 1842 -- with a beautiful natural resonance and a velvety timbre. Taylor has recorded the preludes composed on this Pleyel pianino along with a selection of etudes, nocturnes and mazurkas, all of which suit the sound of the instrument perfectly. A moving transcription of Bellini's Casta diva, an aria that Chopin much admired, is also included here.

Loving the sound of the instrument and declaring that of course I find that Justin Taylor is a top player, I have felt that he has chosen some strange tempi sometimes. The first two pieces are exceedingly slow and lack some flow, while the famous Nocturne op. 9 no. 1 is taken a bit too fast and then, strangely, seems to lose the pulse... I think that it is due to an editing problem, probably using bits of very different takes. All in all a beautiful release to which I will return very often. For Chopin's Nocturnes on period pianos, I still prefer Bart van Oort and Luc Devos.

It may be professional but apart from his interpretation, Tempo and left hand depend on Score, Instrument, supposed venue (here Salon), ...
Ekier and Henle are often used in Chopin but about Op. 9-2 he uses Mikuli + Grabowski, see booklet :)
Chopin has so many editions that editors revises tempo, time signature, stem, slur, variant, dotted note, fingering, expression and so on !
Especially Op. 9-2 are varied according to Scores
