Made up of organist Johan Graden, guitarist Kaspar Agnas, bassist and cellist Mauritz Agnas and percussionist Mischa Grind, the Stockholm-based Ināra Quartet blend folk music with sacred minimalism, skewing transcendent Terry Riley-style repetitions with Moondog influenced percussive cycles.
It's good this! Ināra Quartet were formed three years ago, and felt as if there was fertile ground to be explored between Bulgarian and Scandinavian folk music and more contemporary free improvisation. And from the sounds of 'Diakron', they were right - the title track leads us in fairly slowly, beginning with its jazziest elements: pattered woodblock rhythms and a jazzy bassline. But it transforms without us even realizing at first, taking in oddball pitches from Agnas' twangy guitar, and swelling considerably thanks to Graden's harmonium and synth drones. Soon, Grind has switched up the rhythm and we're hearing a vastly different improvisation.
'Sorghum' is even more mystifying, this time hinged around Grind's skeletal Mark Fell-style beats and Agnas' rhythmic, almost toneless, guitar taps. Agnas and Grind sound as if they're ping ponging phrases back and forth in some kind of complex call-and-response, and the other instruments just skirt the edges, creating harmonies and resonances that only begin to make sense on the second or third runthrough. And the best is saved for last: 'A Blue Room' is the Ināra Quartet's concept realized fully, with brittle folk fiddle sounds and oddly tuned guitar chimes almost falling off the grid while Grind does his best Moondog impression and Graden maps out sacred geometry. We can't wait for next year's full-length.
