Album review

When Xmal Deutschland's debut album, Fetisch, appeared on 4AD in the spring of 1983, it was a perfect encapsulation of the transition that the young label was undergoing at the time. With a slate of early releases notable for their slightly unhinged approach to confrontational post-punk (Birthday Party, Bauhaus, Mass, and, to a lesser degree, early Modern English), 4AD had begun to pivot toward a more atmospheric aesthetic, which was still pretty confrontational and largely unclassifiable, but was also much more nuanced and occasionally impressionistic. Along those lines, Fetisch is both unabashedly direct and also almost completely inscrutable. The forceful angularity and driving rhythmic approach of the German band's music provided a rock-solid foundation for the soaring and mostly unintelligible vocals of Anja Huwe. A cut like "Danthem"—which melded cinematic keyboard figures, dubby percussion, incessantly militaristic rhythms, and Huwe alternating between evocative moans and insistent calls-to-arms—is everything that a goth-rock song should be: scary, weird, insistent, and utterly unpredictable. On Fetisch at least, Xmal Deutschland is the platonic ideal of the genre, eschewing empty melodrama and black-lipstick stereotypes in favor of a countercultural individualism that was as nihilistic as it was nightmarish. Still, whether on an infectious head-bobber like "Qual" (which actually had a pretty good run as a late-night spin at your favorite vampire's dance club) or the guitar-slashing "Stummes Kind," the album showed a stylistic range that few goth bands could master. (It should also be noted, at least for history's sake, that Xmal was one of very few bands in the scene that consisted predominantly of women.) © Jason Ferguson
