review

During their first run of existence in the early years of the 21st century, Mclusky seemed almost magical. A band that delivered bruising, high-dynamic punk rock that was angular and unconventional without being overly technical or self-serious? With a lyrical approach that involved ever-fluctuating proportions of sneering anger and bitterness, and acid-black humor? With a unicorn such as this, it should be unsurprising that Steve Albini was an early champion, and it was equally unsurprising that, as with all good things, Mclusky could not last.

After releasing three albums and undergoing two lineup shifts between 2000 and 2004, the group disbanded under somewhat imprecise circumstances, with two members going on to form Future of the Left. Despite the fervor of their fans, Mclusky did not seem like the type of band that would ever entertain something as crass as a post-breakup reunion, and their two benefit shows in 2014 and 2015 seemed like appropriately circumscribed one-offs. Thus it was quite unexpected when, in 2020, Mclusky formally regrouped—with just Andrew Falkous remaining from the original lineup, alongside drummer Jack Egglestone (who was in the final incarnation of the original run of the band) and bassist Damien Sayell (also of the St. Pierre Snake Invasion). To be sure, a world with Mclusky is better than a world without them, but what could one expect from the band with a decade-plus of maturation under their belts?

First came the raging single, "unpopular parts of a pig," in 2023, and in early 2025, we got a sensitive bit of introspection—"way of the exploding dickhead" (sample lyric: "Our survey says pricks/ They abound"). In other words, we got Mclusky firing on all cylinders. Both tracks are included on the world is still here and so are we, an album that shows a band that may be older and wiser, but also one that is miraculously angrier and less willing to put up with nonsense. Whether the swinging, minimalist post-punk of "the competent horse thief," the louche, swinging "the digger you deep," or "the battle of los anglesea"—which alternates between being punishingly direct and dizzyingly off-kilter—Mclusky still has plenty of tricks up their sleeve. Of course, they offer up more than a few lyrical miracles (any album containing both "kafka-esque novelist franz kafka" and "chekhov's guns" is worth a close read), but Mclusky's most effective power still lies in their ability to be relentlessly forceful while still being completely unpredictable. © Jason Ferguson
