Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) has been recognized and celebrated worldwide as an outstanding authority on classical romantic piano music. How justified this admiration is heard especially at the Beethoven concerts and the Diabelli Variations, united in this 10-CD box and critics are still considered "directional" to this day. Early on, Backhaus had become a German pianist of world rank. At the age of sixteen, he gave his first concert in London, in 1905 he won - against Klemperer and Bartok - the coveted Anton Rubinstein Prize in Paris, and his USA debut in 1912 joined tours through South America and Australia. Twenty-eight years later, he returned to New York again, also impressively documented in this CD collection. As an interesting "encore" for collectors, there are also examples of roles that Backhaus recorded in the 1920s for the reproduction pianos often preferred to gramophone because of their sound quality.
