The Edwin Hawkins Singers emerged in 1967 when Edwin Hawkins and Betty Watson formed the Northern California State Youth Choir in Berkeley, California. This ensemble, comprising 47 young singers, recorded the album Let Us Go into the House of the Lord in 1968. One track, "Oh Happy Day," gained unexpected popularity after receiving airplay on both religious and secular radio stations, leading to over seven million copies sold worldwide. The song reached No. 4 on the U.S. Pop Chart and topped charts in Germany, France, and Switzerland.
In 1970, due to naming rights issues, the choir was renamed the Edwin Hawkins Singers. They continued to produce gospel music, earning Grammy Awards for "Every Man Wants to Be Free" (1972), "Wonderful" (1980), and "If You Love Me" (1983). In 1982, Hawkins established the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar to nurture gospel talent. He was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Edwin Hawkins passed away on January 15, 2018, at the age of 74, leaving a lasting impact on gospel music.
