Duo 彩 AYA (彩 AYA meaning “bright colors” and “vibrancy”) invites listeners to embark on a journey through Cycles – a tapestry of global, ecological, and imaginative landscapes that unite us all. Featuring Rachel Woolf on flute and Makana Jimbu on marimba, this collection combines four commissioned works by close collaborators of the duo, woven with three beloved classics, showcasing the dynamic artistry of two musicians united by their deep musical friendship and shared vision. Together, they breathe new life into the collaborative music space, blending traditions and innovations that spiral across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and even imagined interstellar realms.

At the heart of Cycles is the concept of recurrence and renewal: the cyclical interplay between Rachel and Makana, between composers and performers, and between music and listener. Each piece reflects the vitality and versatility of flute and marimba, exploring delicate phrasing, extreme ranges, intricate rhythms, and kaleidoscopic textures. These pieces, rich with extended techniques and stylistic variety, form an intricate mosaic of sound. Each composition is a reflection of shared stories, personal ties, and cultural connections, brought to life by the duo’s exceptional synergy and artistry.

The cyclical theme extends into the collaborative spirit of the album itself. Miriama Young and Gareth Farr, both hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, draw on the cultural and geographical ties of their homeland and its connection to the Indo-Pacific. Gareth Farr’s work, influenced by the resonant sounds of the gamelan, reflects a tradition that also resonates with Rachel and Makana, who both participated in the gamelan ensemble at the University of North Texas, where the duo first met. Evan Williams and Rachel share a history from their time as students at Bowling Green State University, while Fumihiro Ono and Makana formed a lasting bond while competing at the Italy Percussive Arts Society Competition. Paul Millette, Rachel’s colleague at The University of Texas at San Antonio, also lends his voice to this shared creative endeavor. These relationships infuse the music with authenticity, intimacy, and a sense of shared purpose.
