At times crisp with minimal electronics, at others lush with layers upon layers of ambient textures, the latest solo album from theAdelaidean (the musical name of #1 New York Times-bestselling author Sean Williams) paints an immersive aural portrait of life in another land: Japan, 2024-2025.
Like theAdelaidean's HYPERAUREA (inspired by visiting Casey station in Antarctica), TOKORO places subtly altered field recordings upon a spare synthesized backdrop to capture complex emotional responses that range the spectrum from playful joy to eerie calm. This is not a work intended to sound like Japan, but to capture the liminality of being more than a tourist and less than a citizen in a landscape that is both familiar and alien. Dreamlike, sometimes literally inspired by dreams, TOKORO guides the listener through the strangeness of belonging somewhere without fitting in and is as much about the artist’s preconceptions as it is about the real Japan that lies behind them. A reflection of a reflection, then—a fitting metaphor for the ambient composer’s love of reverb.
Divided in two halves (original tracks plus alternate mixes and edits), TOKORO’s 3 hours and 21 minutes present an array of interpretations of Japan’s rich and diverse soundscapes. Weaving through looping, bass-heavy pulses, dense pads and enigmatic melodic fragments are the regular barks of Japanese ravens (the karasu) and trains that so define Tokyo. Human voices are present too, speaking one of the world’s most complex languages, broken into fragments reflecting a visitor’s frustrated attempts at comprehension while still carrying clear emotional meaning. Layered chord progressions contrast with extended periods of harmonic stasis in the Yo and In scales, drawing on Japanese conventions that aren’t so different from those in the West.
The word “tokoro” speaks to the context of a place, the holisitic connectivity to stories that lie beyond a physical location. On this album, theAdelaidean draws deep into his own emotional responses to create a fully immersive soundscape that recreates an inner world as well as the one around him. Featuring field recordings by Sugai Ken and playful renditions of Japanese toads, TOKORO seeks beyond the polish of Shinjuku and Shibuya (the “bitter valley”) for less cinematic modes of beauty, finding it in the cutting word of a haiku and the chimes of a distant bell.
