Webb Wilder roars back with Hillbilly Speedball, a ten-track mix of raw Americana, introspective reflections, and high-energy rock with guests including Vince Gill.
After a five year break, Webb Wilder’s return with Hillbilly Speedball comes with all the force of a revved-up engine ready to hit the open road. A ten-track joyride through Wilder’s signature Americana blend, the album is both a reflection of his roots and a fearless exploration of new musical territories.
The spark for this new collection ignited when longtime friend and guitarist David Grissom sent Wilder the title track, "Hillbilly Speedball," a song that resonated deeply. "It was in the same key as some of my biggest hits," Wilder recalls, "and it lit a fire under me. I knew I had to record it."
With Grissom's riff at the center, Wilder enlisted an all-star cast of musical heavyweights to bring this project to life. The lineup includes Vince Gill, whom Wilder calls "the world’s most down-to-earth superstar," along with Richard Bennett of Wrecking Crew fame, Fats Kaplin (Jack White, John Prine, Beck), and an extended family of musicians who’ve crossed Wilder’s path over the years.
The tracklist blends classic covers with Wilder’s own compositions, each song infused with the kind of nostalgia that only certain tunes can evoke. "I’ve always been a sucker for the songs that get to you at just the right time in your life," Wilder explains, "the ones that stay with you because they hit you when you’re ready to hear them."
But beneath the high-octane rockers and foot-stomping country rhythms, Hillbilly Speedball is laced with a deeper introspection. As Wilder reflects on his nearly four-decade career, the album reveals a journey of personal and musical evolution. "The more I know myself, the clearer it becomes why I’ve always been drawn to beat music and roots music," he says. "And I’ve always loved blending genres, mixing it all together in a way that feels fresh."
With Hillbilly Speedball, Webb Wilder proves once again that he is a true pioneer of American roots rock. It’s his 13th album in a career that’s seen him as a fixture of Americana music long before it had a name, and a legacy that includes major label releases, MTV airplay, a spot in the Mississippi Musicians’ Hall of Fame and his own show on SiriusXM.
