Coming hot on the heels of A Colourful Storm's reissue of Eddie Marcon's ace 'Yahho no Potori', 'Carpet of Fallen Leaves' is the perfect intro to the Japanese acid-folk band's idiosyncratic universe, compiling rare archival gems from over two decades of underground activity. Essential listening for fans of Ai Aso, Ilyas Ahmed, Tenniscoats, Islaja or Maher Shalal Hash Baz.

We're surprised this hadn't happened sooner. Eddie Corman and Jules Marcon have been quietly setting accumulating a cult following since 2001, when Corman was playing in power duo Coa and both were members of Shinsuke Michishita's psych rock outfit LSD March. Eddie Marcon was a chance for the duo to break away from the Japanese noise underground's harsh extremes, and their sublime first CDrs were archived on the Preservation-released album 'Shining On Graveposts' - a Boomkat fave back in 2005. 'Carpet of Fallen Leaves' opens with 'あみめ / Amime', that classic album's opening track (and a component of their Japanese-only debut 'あおいあしおと'), and it hasn't aged a day. Corman's fragile, ghostly voice floats and cracks over Marcon's robust, psych-y twangs, and the sparse, thundering percussion just tips it over the edge. It's gothic folk, a reverb-drenched funeral march that might be more poignant two decades later. Then there's the lullaby-like fan-favorite 'とらとらいおん / Tora To Lion', another early catalog highlight that's been a live staple ever since.

The majority of the material on 'Carpet of Fallen Leaves' though comes from far less familiar sources. Operating their own Pong-Kong Records imprint, Corman and Marcon have released countless CDrs and private-press editions, and Morr Music has taken the initiative to compile the edited highlights for Western listeners. It's consistently fascinating material too, most of which has never appeared on this side of the world; take the stripped-down '嘆きの亀 / Nageki No Kame' for example, an ethereal loosie from 2010's '染色' CDr, or 2020's '飛んでる / Tonderu', a low-key organ-led tripper that sounds as if it was taped in a waterlogged basement. There are plenty of feature spots, too: Radar's Yasuhisa Mizutani shows up on '新しい場所 / New Season' playing flute while Boredoms drummer Yojiro Tatekawa handles percussion, and Tsutomu Motoyama plays moving pedal steel guitar on 2013's country-influenced 'さらうかぜ / Saraukaze'. There's so much here to sink your teeth into; if you enjoyed 'Yahho no Potori', this is as essential as they come.
