Mohamed Ibrahim Kwame Frimpong, known as Alhaji K. Frimpong (1939–2005), was a prominent Ghanaian highlife musician born in Ofoase, Ashanti Region. Raised in Akyim Oda, his love for music began early, leading to a career that started in 1952 with the Axim Jockers. Though nicknamed "Alhaji," he converted from Islam to Christianity in the early 1970s. He performed with several bands including Star de Republic, Oko’s Guitar Band, and K. Gyasi’s Band before founding his own group, Cubano Fiesta, with support from E.K. Darbo.
Frimpong played a key role in modernizing highlife, incorporating funk, reggae, and electronic organ sounds. He regularly performed at the Apollo Theater in Accra and was hailed in 1979 by GBC as “The Struggling Highlife King.” His acclaimed album Rikia (1990) was recorded in Holland, and his final album Okwantuni (1995), a dance-oriented highlife project, was co-produced with Gilbert Amartey Amar. It was pressed locally and distributed via a German label. His legacy remains strong, with plans to celebrate his music again in 2025 with a remastered release.
